shecountscrows, posting in longhair @ 01:50 pm: holiday hair help
So, I've recently bought my first-ever decorative comb--
a cute one that I want to wear for Christmas and perhaps Thanksgiving, too
(NOTE: that's not me, it's the artisan who made it. For more of her work, check here. She does a lot of seasonal stuff. )

But, the problem is, I don't know how to do much with my hair,
and definitely don't know how to show off the thing to it's best advantage.

I'm a few inches past bsl, not terribly thick, and have natural wave in the texture, but can be combed straight.

Any suggestions, Lovely Longhairs?
I'm open to anything, so long as directions are included!

Thank you in advance for any help ^^

me_miscreation, posting in longhair @ 03:44 pm: Hi everyone, I've been growing my hair for nearly ten years, when I was 21 I had it cut to my jawline. With regular trims I'm still not able to sit on it, which frustrates me. Hopefully in the next couple of years I'll see more length.

Way too much info about my greaseball hair... )
Is it damaging to use baking soda daily? Is my scalp ever going to 'adjust' and be less oily? Thanks again for any advice you can give me!

apocalypticbob, posting in longhair @ 03:48 pm: New (to me) shampoo
Hi, I'm Amber. Long time lurker, occasional commenter, first time poster.

I've been unhappy with most shampoos, but I can't go no-poo...it just doesn't work for me. A friend ordered some shampoo recently online (he received it as part of a starter pack from the company, and he is follically challenged) and gave me some of it to try, and I'm in LOVE!

Here's what it says on the label:

Cal Ben Soap Company
Five Star Soap Product Shampoo
Triple Concentrate Pure Soap
Natural Safe Hair & Skin Care for Every Body
Directions: Apply Sparingly, massage thoroughly, rinse & repeat.
Contains: Extra Virgin Coconut Oils, Essential Coco Fat Essence with Vegetable Protein Conditioner
Family Owned & Earth Friendly since 1947
1-800-340-7091
http://www.calbenpuresoap.com

Shampoo is a thick honey colored liquid that smells faintly of coconut oil. I used a very small amount through my BSL curly hair, and it felt pretty good, but didn't lather much. I decided to repeat, as the label recommended, though I don't know if it is necessary. Did later much more on the second wash. I rinsed it, and my hair felt as if it had already been conditioned. I didn't have to use conditioner, and I always use conditioner. My hair felt great, and the scent was very light, which is nice for me, because I like to wear BPAL in my hair. I had used styling product, and it removed it with no difficulty.

The website for the shampoo, found here, says it can also be used as a bubble bath, fabric softener, and rug shampoo. It claims to be all natural and may even be vegan friendly, but it doesn't claim that, and you would need to contact the company to ascertain that.

I had never seen this mentioned here before, so I thought I would throw it out as an option in case others were interested.

I just wanted to say how inspiring this community has been. I am growing my hair out and it is finally getting long and I am loving it. I haven`t cut it in 6 months and I can definitely tell I`m getting some length.

So I`m on my path to beautiful long hair. I stopped flat ironing my hair and blow dry as minimally as possible. I`ve also started brushing my hair out before showers, and braiding before bed to avoid tangling.
AND I`ve gotten my husband to jump on the band wagon and grow his hair long too *sexy!*

VERY excited. *squeak*

Since I have curly hair, should I never ever ever (ever?) use a brush? Ever? Just a wide toothed comb? Really?

oh boy...

pirategeisha, posting in longhair @ 02:56 am: Vinegar?
I've heard people talk up vinegar as both a clarifying shampoo OR a conditioner. Is it one or the other? Is it both? How safe are ACV rinses for curly hair?

And because I love pictures, and because y'all might not be quite sick of it yet: my hair, which is a total diva and just wants attention. I did a nice olive oil + lavender deep condition last night (rinsed with Giovanni shampoo then conditioned with DevaCurl) and it feels GOOD.

sarahisdope, posting in longhair @ 06:10 pm: Flat hair help
As my very fine, very thin wavy hair continues to grow, I find it gets flatter and flatter on top, so I have some questions for you long hair lovelies.

1. If you have fine, thin hair -
     a. do you find it difficult to add/maintain volume in ways that are not damaging?
     b. What do you do to help with volume?
     c. is flat hair something someone with fine/thin hair has to accept if they want long hair?
2. To everyone -
     a. what do you guys think about the volume issues?

advice/tips welcome

(ps. im not looking for huge dolly-parton hair, just something more than this pitifully flat hair that i seem to be rocking now)

slightlysoprano, posting in longhair @ 01:02 am: New Here
Hello lovely people :)

I am new to this community, been a lurker for a bit and finally decided to make a post. I'm currently getting over a I WANT TO CUT IT SHORT NOW NOW NOW phase and trying to get re inspired to grow my hair out. Currently while it's wet, it's probably 6 inches below my shoulders, dry it's shorter because i have curly hair, but the curls are quite loose.... but not quite waves either. It's confusing. Anyways, I just got into using an organic shampoo from Chagrin Valley Soaps, because my hair started falling out like crazy, and I think its partially due to a sensitivity to SLS. Since the switch, MUCH less hair has been falling out, and i'm hoping some of it might fill in the bald patches (i'm only 20, its hard to deal with bald patches when you're this young).

SO my question to you, lovely long haired friends, have you ever heard that brushing your hair every night pretty vigorously helps stimulate the follicle? I'm not convinced...

Thoughts?

Pictures soon, I promise.

Pleasure to meet you all. =D

Million dollar question - "are you wearing extensions"
Personally this is my favourite reply - "Does it fucking look like i'm wearing extensions" Though this is rather vulgar ha!
Grr really annoys me because natural long hair is beautiful + certainly doesn't look clipped in!

glassmuse, posting in longhair @ 03:19 am: Hey everyone .. I have a question that is often posted here, but with a little variance. I'm sorry if this is redundant. I've been here a little while and haven't posted yet, but have read and commented, and I love this community! Very supportive, kind people here (all very beautiful too!). Anyway, here it goes.

So, I'm growing my hair out. It is very, very curly. Not tiny-ringlet size, but pretty close, with some bigger curls and smaller curls in the mix. The goal is BSL. Right now I'm a little past collar-bone, and I've been taking care of my hair in ways I never have before, all thanks to this community. I've switched to ACV rinse (no 'poo), honey, and olive oil. I will never touch a straightener or hair-dryer (... I hope) again. I plan on performing a very healthy body-art-quality henna experiment on my hair in the next week, mixing a little indigo in there to keep the color close to my natural.

So! That's the background, now here's my question: Every night, I try to braid my hair. I get a rat's nest in the morning. I don't like wearing my hair in a bun because the same thing happens over night! And wearing it down is just a nightmare. Maybe I should just resort to a nightcap. It's not even quite long enough for a truly effective braid.

What do you ladies (or gents) do with long, curly hair overnight?

Oh, and I plan on buying silk pillowcases sometime in the near future. This is my hope, that it'll make a difference.

I just thought I would share a couple of pictures. I love my long hair though it is a chore. I am half-black so it's VERY thick. I have no plans to cut it and my husband LOVES it. So here's a couple...

tashar, posting in longhair @ 11:14 pm: Hair Stick Recommendation
Greetings,

I just ordered and have begun to use hair sticks fashioned by etsy craftsman screaminnorwegian. Specificially, my sticks are a 7 inch-long (3/8" wide) pair made of corian (yes - countertop material).

This pair is perfect for keeping a firm hold on my thick, coarse, curly shoulder length hair - in fact, I really only need 1 of the 2 at any given time. While I've seen wooden and metal sticks, I've not encountered too many made from countertop material!

In comparison, I've had little luck with sticks or forks found in most mainstream establishments. The metals ones inevitably bend (then break), and the (thin) wooden ones just snap in two. Jezzard's chignon pins worked quite well on my hair - however, a bit beyond what I can budget. At $18 + S/H, the corian pair are quite a nice purchase.

Has anyone else tried corian (silestone, marble) sticks? I'd love to compare notes.

2omaha_withlove, posting in longhair @ 09:46 pm: funky colored longhairs?
Hey all,
Anyone want to show off their long differently color hair? I'm about 2 inches from waist-length at the moment with pretty wavy hair. I was thinking about dying my hair pink or some other color but I feel like it would look silly and "interesting" colors look better on short hair.

Prove me wrong!
Pictures please?

~*~EDIT~*~
Thanks so much for the quick responses. Moment of weakness I guess, I've been growing my hair out from maybe an inch long (basically buzzed) to the current length for 3 years. Looking into henna or something similar to get a more red hue over my natural brown...

feikusa, posting in longhair @ 05:46 pm: Hair Progress
It seems like there are a LOT of picture posts lately.

Which is a good thing, right? Text-only advice is great, but I love to see pictures of everyone else's hair growth and especially pictures of all of you longhairs' hair. It inspires me to keep going!

So hopefully this is inspiring to somebody out there??

I think my hair has JUST BARELY reached BSL. It would have probably been there months ago if I haven't been so crazy with my trimming/dusting. D: I think I'm just going to stop. I've probably cut a good 2-3 inches off in the past couple of months. Eeep.
